Travellers At Home

A Compromise.

When I last wrote, our plans for a year in South America had gotten started and I was trying to decide what this meant for the blog.

After a few months of debating between keeping up our previous 3-4x weekly blog post schedule and giving up entirely, I’ve decided on a happy medium: social media.

When I started this blog in 2016, Instagram was well-established but not the force it is in 2018. Over that time, most of my favourite bloggers have transitioned into a mostly social media-driven presence with opportunities to point followers towards blog posts when relevant.

So that’s the plan– I know that most of our current readership came here through searches for information on Mongolia, Myanmar, or one of the other (super random) locations we’ve written on, and I do still want to post helpful itineraries, lists of what to bring, tips, etc. But it won’t happen on as much of a regular schedule and our main communication will come through Instagram posts and stories.

Stay tuned for a few posts on packing advice, and until then, follow us @unsettledlife on Instagram if you’d like real-time updates on our prep for 2019.

My 11 Favourite Travel-Related TV Episodes

Excellent news for those of us who love television: the US networks are about a week away from premiering many of our favourite shows for another season. I’m personally looking forward to Masters of Sex Season 4 and I’m still waiting for M.’s return from Europe so we can start Stranger Things.

In honour of the most wonderful time of the year, I’ve rounded up 11 (couldn’t stop at just 10!) of the best travel-related episodes of my favourite TV shows, as well as their real-life locations that are officially on my travel bucket list.

Friends – Season 4, Episode 23: The One With Ross’s Wedding

The gang head to London to see Ross get married, leaving a pregnant Phoebe and heartbroken Rachel behind. While Chandler and Joey explore London and get on each others’ nerves, Rachel decides to fly to the wedding to tell Ross she loves him. A classic!

Best Quote

Monica: “You guys, hurry up! The flight leaves in four hours! It could take time to get a taxi! There could be traffic! The plane could leave early! When we get to London there could be a line at customs! COME ON!”

Chandler: “Six hour trip to London– that’s a lot of Monica.”

Real-Life Location: London, baby!

Bonus Episode: Season 5, Episode 23: The One In Vegas, where they take advantage of all the casinos have to offer: gambling, breakfast buffet and mini-bars included.

Travellers at home: Host a Brazilian brunch party for the Olympics

You’ve got to find fun where you can, right? Thanks to my hostess-with-the-mostest-mom’s traditions, I’ve inherited a love of throwing a party for a party’s sake.

Especially when you’re used to travelling or longing for another trip, it can break up the monotony of regular life to celebrate with some international flavour.

And thus, the idea for an Olympic party was born. I hosted this Rio-themed breakfast for the Opening Ceremonies, but the concept works just as well for the Closing Ceremonies, or, if you’re in a different timezone (in Australia, the Rio evening is our morning), on the occasion of a particularly exciting sporting event.

Details, photos, and Olympics recipes after the jump!

When you’re craving travel but have to stay put

There are some days when the wanderlust hits hard. I get the itch, the need, the craving to head to the airport and go– wherever. Sometimes it happens when life is particularly routine or stressful; other times when I’m feeling envious of someone else’s photos from Prague or Cambodia. Sometimes it’s just a shaft of sunlight hitting the pavement or the scent of wet earth, reminding me that the world is out there for me to see.
