We survived a 30-hour ferry (including 6-hour delay) - but to be honest, it wasn’t surviving, it was thriving. Our ‘ferry’ was a cargo ship with a small section for ferry passengers, which we were a bit apprehensive about when we saw the ship docked. When we finally got on it after an afternoon waiting around in the hostel (luckily about 12 other people were also taking the ferry so it became a bit of a waiting party... 🍷🍷🍺🍺🥃🥃), we discovered that we had accidentally bought first-class tickets with fully reclinable bed seats! Apparently that was the only class you could buy online outside of Chile, and since Marco booked the ferry from Melbourne we ended up unwittingly spending about $80 extra to spend 30 hours in pure comfort. That $80 extra is easily a day’s budget for us, which stings a little, but... nah, it was worth it. The ferry from Puerto Williams to Punta Arenas goes through 600 kilometres of the most untouched, pristine, and windswept islands in Patagonia. We saw seals, sea lions, and dolphins and a guy sitting near us saw a penguin. They fed us decent meals, we had access to showers (though I never did figure out how to get hot water...), and because of our delay Marco was able to see hours of stunning glaciers in the early morning. And I got to read in a comfy chair for an entire day! Who knew that 30-hours on a cargo ship could be so great.

We still exist! It’s been a cosy few days camping on Isla Navarino in the adorable town of Puerto Williams. Every single other person at the campsite is doing the 3-5-day Dientes de Navarino hike except us 🤷🏻‍♀️ - we just wanted to see the end of the world after the end of the world. (Ushuaia claims to be the end of the world, but Isla Navarino is further south, so...) We’ve done a few day hikes, experienced some extreme wind, tested out our excellent camping gear, biked inadvisably far along the coastal road, had our laundry washed to perfection by a local lady. Mostly, though, we’ve cosied up with books and hot chocolate and biscuits in the campsite’s warm cabin filled with squashy chairs and fellow travellers. What a dream!

The absolutely stunning Laguna Esmeralda. This is a more touristy walk than the others we’ve done this week in Ushuaia, but there is a very good reason it attracts a lot of people. This was also a 0 peso experience for us. Our Airbnb this week was about 4kms closer to Laguna Esmeralda than the city centre, so we easily hitchhiked (sorry, parents, godparents, etc, but in Ushuaia it’s super safe to do this - we won’t attempt it in other places!) the remaining 18 or so kms on Routa 3 with a friendly local. The Routa 3 entrance is free, and we had an even easier time finding friendly fellow trekkers to hitch a ride with back to the city centre. And all this after a late afternoon start, after relaxing and getting bags packed in preparation for our crossing into Chile today. Overall, we’ve been really pleased with how the travel budget is shaking out. We’re averaging about AUD$130 per day total, which is a lot lower than people predict for Patagonia. Fingers crossed we can keep it up longer than a week!
